Dra. Laura Karreman is working as a PhD candidate on the research project ‘Capturing Dance Movements, Intensities and Embodied Experiences’ that explores how dance can be captured by digital media and technologies with respect for dance experience and embodied expression. Before, she worked as a freelance dramaturge, as a teacher in the Honours Programme Art Theory at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts, as a performing arts advisor for the Amsterdam Art Fund and as a research assistant at the Theatre Studies department of Utrecht University. She received her BA in Theatre, Film and Television studies from Utrecht University and earned her research MA degree in Art Studies at the University of Amsterdam with a thesis on the performative quality of body metaphors in theatre performances.

Capturing Dance Movements, Intensities and Embodied Experiences. Research Into New Possibilities of Digital Media for Dance Analysis and Notation based on Fase (1982) by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and ROSAS
Many different forms of dance notation have been developed throughout history, but each one has its limitations. In translating dance movements into signs, important information about dance experience and embodied expression tends to be lost. Video registration has limitations as well; the two-dimensional image effects a distanced view, not an embodied perception. This research project aims at creating new understandings of dance analysis and notation by bringing the knowledge of performance and dance theory in conjunction with other fields such as cognitive science, systematic musicology, computational modelling, and technology research. It attempts to revaluate the mnemonic capacities of the human body in connection with new digital opportunities. More info on the project.
