Research Interests:
Ethics and Aesthetics of antique and contemporary Theatre, Dance (and Performance).
In her Katharina Pewny’s Habilitation thesis on the “Theatre of the Precarious”, she develops the concept of the “precarious” as a new analytical category for Performance Studies. In the course of this project she has translated Emmanuel Lévinas’ ethics into the realm of performance. For this research project she received the highest funding awards given by Austrian funding institutions. Katharina Pewny thus created a firm link between Performance Studies, Gender and Postcolonial Studies. From her roots in Performance Studies, the researcher is further expanding the body of her research into three more areas: 1. theatre history (Greek classics), 2 relational dramaturgy and 3. into the performativity of new media and techonologies. She invites Ma- and PhD projects on the above mentioned and related topics.
Recently, Katharina Pewny organized panels at the International Federation for Theatre Research and at the congress of the Gesellschaft für Theaterwissenschaft on “Transnational Dramaturgy” and on “Das Subjekt der Dramaturgie”.
