Short Biography
Katharina Pewny studied Theater, Film and Media Studies, German Literature and Philosophy at the University of Vienna. She wrote her Masters thesis on ‘Tragedy as a Paradigm and Construction of the Female’ (1993). She holds a PhD (University of Vienna) in Theatre, Film and Media Studies (1999). In her PhD thesis, she applied theories of “mimesis” (Plato, Aristotle, Adorno, Irigaray) to contemporary dramatic art. From 1999, Katharina Pewny was a lecturer and assistant at the University of Vienna, at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Graz and at the University of Hamburg. She also worked as a research fellow at the University of California Los Angeles, at the Free University in Berlin and at the University of Hamburg.
Katharina Pewny’s Habilitation thesis (2009) on the “Theatre of the Precarious” concerns contemporary European Theatre, Dance and Performance Art. In it, she develops the concept of the “precarious” as a new analytical category for Performance Studies. In the course of this project she has translated Emmanuel Lévinas’ account of the encounter with the “Other” into the realm of performance. For the research project on the ‘Theatre of the Precarious’ she received the highest funding awards given by Austrian funding institutions. Her study on the ‘Ethics and Aesthetics of the Theatre of the Precarious’ will be published in 2010. In addition to this publication, she has edited two books on contemporary theatre and performance art, and she has contributed to numerous European, American and Australian anthologies and journals in the field of Theatre Studies.
In fall 2009, Katharina Pewny was appointed to the faculty of Ghent University.

Ze schreef haar masterthesis over ‘Tragedy as a Paradigm and Construction of the Female’ (1993). Haar studie over de ‘Ethics and Aesthetics of the Theatre of the Precarious’ zal in 2010 gepubliceerd worden.
